Refurbished laptops and phones: how to buy one safely
Refurbished is the easiest way around this year's price rises. What eBay's and Amazon's programs promise, how they compare, and what to check before you buy.

A refurbished laptop or phone is one that was returned, came off a lease, or was a display model, then checked, repaired if needed, cleaned, and resold. Bought from the right program, it comes with a real warranty and an easy return. In a year when memory costs pushed new laptop prices up, it's the simplest way to pay less.
Why refurbished, why now
Apple raised Mac prices on June 25, 2026, citing the cost of memory chips, and other makers have raised prices or trimmed specs. Meanwhile last year's models, which were made before the increases, keep coming back through trade-in and lease programs. A refurbished laptop from 2025 with 16GB of memory is often a better machine than a new budget laptop with 8GB at the same price.
eBay Refurbished
eBay sorts refurbished items into four grades, each with a warranty serviced by Allstate:
- Certified Refurbished: sold by the manufacturer or a seller the manufacturer approved. Looks and works like new. Two-year warranty.
- Excellent - Refurbished: sold by a vetted independent seller. Like new, with little or no sign of use. One-year warranty.
- Very Good - Refurbished: minimal wear. One-year warranty.
- Good - Refurbished: moderate wear you can see. One-year warranty.
eBay Refurbished items come with free 30-day returns, subject to certain exceptions, and warranties start on the purchase date. Look for the grade in the listing's condition line, not just the word "refurbished" in the title.
Amazon Renewed
Amazon Renewed items are inspected and tested by qualified sellers. They're covered by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee: returns within 90 days on most items, for a refund or a replacement. Items labeled Renewed Premium get a full year. The guarantee doesn't cover accidental damage, theft, or tampering.

- The grade and the warranty, in the listing's condition line. Certified Refurbished is the safe default for anything you'll use daily.
- The battery. Batteries wear out. Good listings state the battery's health or say it was replaced; if not, ask the seller.
- The exact model and year, plus memory and storage. "MacBook Pro" covers ten years of machines.
- Phones: unlocked, or your carrier. Make sure the phone works on your carrier and isn't financed or blacklisted.
- What it really sells for. Open eBay's sold listings for the model to see what buyers actually paid recently, then judge the asking price.
- Keep the paperwork: the order confirmation is your warranty proof.
